Hand Surgery

Hand injuries can be devastating, given the degree that each of us relies on them to perform the most basic of tasks. Hand surgery is a complicated procedure requiring training and experience. A hand surgeon must be able to skillfully and adequately reconstruct the skin, bone, nerves, tendons, and joints. Because this may require several operations to complete, patients must be committed to their recovery and aftercare.

While thousands of people undergo cosmetic procedure every year with positive results, choosing a doctor can be the most important way to ensure a successful outcome.

Here are some tips for success.

Personal interviews
Be sure to plan time to interview a selection of doctors and to spend enough time with each to ask some tough questions and evaluate your comfort level with them. Ask about the specific hand surgery procedure you need – find out how many of that type they have performed, how many they perform each year and what types of complications they have dealt with. They should be willing to provide patient references that you can contact.

Check their credentials
Once you have narrowed down your selection, the state medical board can confirm that your doctor of choice is licensed to practice in the state and provide a report of any settlements or records of disciplinary action.

A cosmetic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery has completed an education specifically in plastic procedure, beyond the minimum required to be licensed to practice medicine. For plastic surgeon, this entails at least five years of training with at least two of those specifically in plastic surgery plus continuing education to maintain certification. A patient can verify their surgeon’s certification directly from the ABSP website.

Make sure you know where the hand surgery will be performed and that it is an accredited facility. The association that grants the accreditation can provide this confirmation. If not performed at a hospital, confirm that the doctor has hospital privileges at a nearby facility that will provide a place to take a patient in the event of complications.

Finally, the last deciding factor should be your own intuition. A cosmetic surgeon could be the most highly recommended in the state but if you don’t feel at ease with him or her, it’s probably best to keep looking. You’ll need to have realistic expectations in regards to what hand surgery can and cannot accomplish.

Most people use their hands often, whether to work or perform daily tasks. Therefore, when you experience an injury on this body part, it is necessary for it to be fixed quickly. Fortunately, there are a few types of hand surgery that are meant to cure some of the most common issues encountered.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is quite common, but luckily, it can be repaired in most cases. The hand surgery available for this ailment requires the surgeon to make an incision near the wrist, cutting the tissue that is putting pressure on the affected nerves. Once the pressure is relieved, the hands will be bandaged up, and a wrist brace will need to be worn while the area heals.

The splint will need to stay on for at least two weeks usually, and pain medication will likely be necessary during that time. The recovery time varies depending on the person, as well as how long the pain was present before the operation.

One type of malady that many do not know about is called Dupuytren’s contracture, which usually involves thickening of the skin of the palm. The result is that the fingers contract, and there is also a reduction in the ability for the hands to function. The operation involves cutting into the area where the thickened tissue is, which should allow the fingers to move freely again.

Occasionally, a skin graft is needed to replace the thickened skin, and physical therapy may be needed afterward to help the fingers move freely once again.

Another ailment is rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disorder that results in inflammation of the joints. Treatment varies depending on the patient and how severe the disease is.

Sometimes, surgical cleaning works fine, in which the old inflamed tissue is simply removed so that it does not hurt as much to move the joints. However, many older patients with severe cases need to undergo arthroplasty, which involves replacing the joint with an artificial one. These are just some of the most common types of hand surgery for this condition.

There are plenty of issues that can occur with hands and wrists. Luckily, there are surgeries appropriate for nearly all of them. If you ever have an injury in this area, it is important to know immediately whether there is a way to correct the issue. This way, you can set up an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible in order to fix the issue.

Hide Your True Age

Under: Anti-aging

It seems like when you are young we cannot wait to grow up but when we get there, we wish we were still young. This is why, in my opinion, the anti aging market has exploded at the seams with product after product and procedure after procedure. Remember in your economics class in school when they talk about supply and demand? The anti aging market is a perfect example of this concept. The only issue I see is that while everyone is concentrating so hard on making their faces and bodies appear younger, they are forgetting about the most prominent sign of your actual age…your neck.

The reason that I chose the neck to talk about in regards to anti aging is due to the fact that not many people seem to pay attention to skin care involving this area. Your neck receives the same amount of damage from the sun and other environmental conditions as your face or other areas. The fact that we do not even have the thought of proper neck care in our minds is one of the main reasons why we are never satisfied with our anti aging products and procedures because we still appear older. If everyone knew the importance of healthy skin ALL over the body, than neck care would not be a topic of conversation or would anti aging products and procedures. Since this is not how life is, and some of us may have never been taught about how our skin properly works and functions, we should take the time to learn this and hopefully correct our past mistakes.
Mexican pharmacy human growth hormone
The way to do this should involve finding a great skin care product that contains ingredients that not only help the afflicted areas but also provides the nutrients your skin needs to heal and stay healthy. So when you are dealing with the neck, you best bet is to find a separate neck cream to treat any of the issues you have regarding this area, whether it be wrinkles, sagging skin, or lines. Also, due to the fact that the skin on your neck is a little thinner than the skin on your face, you want to make sure that the neck creams you use have ingredients that are gentle and can work well with sensitive skin. For a great suggestion regarding a neck cream, or any skin care product for that matter, go for the gentlest types of ingredients which are the organic or nature kind. The reason organic or natural ingredients work so well with your body is because they are not a foreign element; your body will recognize these ingredients and allow them to work alongside the processes in your body.

A wrinkle fighting ingredient by the name of Matrixyl is a great example of how this works. Being a peptide (which are naturally occurring amino acids in your body), Matrixyl can easily adapt to your body and work to get the skin on your neck or face to be smoothed out. Matrixyl goes for the collagen and elastin fiber producers in your body and added a doubling effect to their output. Meaning that it gets in there and makes these procedures work faster and harder, allowing for wrinkles to be reduced in appearance. Also, since we were on the subject of neck creams and how sensitive your neck is, Matrixyl being of a natural base will not irritate or cause any adverse reactions on your sink. So when you are in the market for a neck cream or for that matter, any anti aging product, Matrixyl is a great ingredient to be on the look for.

Giving your skin the extra help it needs to do what you want it to do is by no means a negative thing. Using a neck cream or anti aging product with natural active ingredients as well as other organic ingredients can only help you on your road to looking younger. Also, the extra attention you pay to EVERY part of your body (your neck for example) will do wonders for your skin and hopefully your confidence. The best way to keep from aging quickly is with proper prevention, but if you are already seeing the signs of aging skin, it is time to find the best neck cream and wrinkle cream with the ingredients you need. You will be very happy that you did.

Breast Augmentation

Under: Cancer

Many women looking to undergo breast augmentation are concerned with the risk of cancer related to silicone implants, as well as the risk of the implant obscuring breast tissue during a mammogram when detecting cancer.

When accusations arose in the 1980’s regarding silicone implants and links to cancer, autoimmune diseases and other systemic diseases, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided to enact a 30 month testing period for the implants. After that time, officials felt there was insufficient data to prove whether or not the implants could be linked to cancer. At this point the silicone implants were banned for cosmetic use, however, were still approved for use during breast reconstruction subsequent to mastectomy and breast cancer. In 1993, after the FDA felt thorough testing had been completed, silicone implants were approved for cosmetic use under the guideline that continued controlled clinical studies would be perform. To this day no sufficient evidence has been provided to link silicone implants to any form of cancer or related disease.

In fact, according to a Swedish study of 3,400 women, breast augmentation patients had a 30% decreased rate of breast cancer. A similar study of 13,000 women in the United States showed that women with breast implants also had a decreased rate of breast cancer. This is believed to be related to the decreased temperature of the breast, compression of breast tissue and stimulation of immunological response. Experts believe it may also be attributed to the fact that the majority of patients stem from a higher socioeconomic class, where patients have tendencies toward better nutrition and overall health.

Interestingly, studies from the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium also show that breast cancer is detected at approximately the same time whether or not the patient has implants. Furthermore, when breast cancer is discovered, patients with breast implants are more likely to have a lower grade of the cancer.

When it comes to detecting breast cancer, implants can obscure breast tissue by 15%-50% depending on the surgical technique performed during the breast augmentation and the technique used to perform the mammogram.

Both silicone and saline implants display as a white, mostly opaque oval on the mammogram. One does not obscure visualization more than the other. However, implants placed under the muscle significantly increase visibility of the breast tissue.

When scheduling your appointment to receive a mammogram, it is very important to inform the practice that you have undergone breast augmentation. Mammograms for patients with breast implants require more time to properly examine the breast.

To gain maximum exposure of the breast, a trained technician will push the implant back as far as possible toward the chest wall and pull the breast tissue forward. This technique can improve readings by up to 92%. Breast augmentation patients undergoing mammograms also require 4 views of the breast rather than 2 in order to view as much of the breast as possible.

Orthorexia

Under: Eating Disorders

The adage “everything in moderation” maintains its wisdom these days, even when looking at supposedly “healthy” behavior. While healthy eating is important, if not essential, for cardiac health, vitality and overall well-being, when one becomes obsessively focused on only eating a narrow band of initially “healthy foods“, one can suffer from a new member of the eating disorder family, orthorexia.

Orthorexia, a term coined in 1997 by Colorado physician Steven Bratman, has its origins in two Greek words, orthos, meaning “correct of right” and orexis, meaning “appetite”. An orthorexia suffer may initially have “health-minded” goals in their eating plans, but may take these goals to an extreme, to the point their diet is so restricted or severe, malnutrition can result.

I remember, in college, one of my classmates was obsessed with eating carrots and carrot juice. While a healthy food, when eaten in mass quantity, carrots turn your skin orange and can make you sick. My classmate became more and more orange, and started to feel ill. It was an earth-shattering revelation for her to discover that you CAN get too much of a “good thing”.

Raw food eating can become a breeding ground for orthorexia as well. When taken to the extreme, it can become a kind of anorexia, where the individual becomes emaciated and denies themselves the nutrition their body truly needs in pursuit of a rigid principle.

Likewise, avoiding food preservatives and additives is important in healthy eating, however, when one’s definition of products that are “pure and healthy” (in contrast to industrial products and processed foods, which can be considered artificial and unhealthy), becomes too extreme, one’s health can start to decline.

While the anorexic wants to be thin, and compulsively works to lose weight beyond what is tolerable for their well-being, the orthorexic wants to feel pure and natural to the point they lose sight of what is actually healthy.

Sadly, eating issues in one generation may translate into eating issues for another generation. A woman I know whose thoughts and habits are at least borderline orthorexic, is the mother of a young teenage daughter who has become anorexic. In some ways, the teenage daughter is in a power struggle for perfection with her mother. Since her mother is so focused on being healthy and pure, the daughter needed to find a trump card. Anorexia became her point of power.

Finding a way to a healthy middle ground is an emotional, spiritual and educational journey in a culture that too easily swings between extremes. With eating, the healthy middle ground is truly a balance point worth defining!

Dairy Food & Dieting

A stigma exists that dairy foods are fattening and concerns are growing as many teenagers, especially females, and young women are not achieving their recommended daily intake of calcium.

The facts

Milk and milk products are by far the most important dietary sources of calcium. Milk and other dairy products serve as the most dependable sources of calcium because they are readily available, relatively low in cost and exist in a wide variety of forms such as milk, cheese, yoghurt and ice-cream.

Also, the calcium in milk is readily absorbed because all milk contains lactose and is fortified with vitamin D, both of which are known to facilitate calcium absorption.

Non-fat milk is a slightly better source of calcium than whole fat milk because the fat portion is replaced by the calcium-rich portion.

The other major nutrients provided by milk and milk based dairy products besides calcium and vitamin D include phosphorus, riboflavin, protein, vitamin B12, zinc and magnesium. They are poor sources of vitamin C and iron.

Current dietary recommendations

Milk, cheese, yoghurt

These foods are notable for their contributions of calcium, riboflavin, protein, vitamin B12 and when fortified, vitamin D and vitamin A. The food pyramid guide recommends the following in relation to the consumption of dairy foods:

  • 2 servings per day
  • 3 servings per day for teenagers and young adults, pregnant/lactating women, women post menopause
  • 4 servings per day for pregnant/lactating teenagers

Dairy products such as butter and cream are milk fats that contain negligible calcium because calcium is not soluble in fat. These are calorie dense foods and should be consumed sparingly, hence their positioning at the apex of the food pyramid.

Recommended daily requirements for calcium are as follows:

  • 400-600 mg for young infants (birth-1year)
  • 800-1200 mg for children (1-10 years)
  • 1200-1500 mg for adolescents and young adults (11-24 years)
  • 1000 mg for women 20-25 years old and not on estrogens and women older than 65
  • 1200-1500 mg for pregnant and nursing women

There is no scientific evidence that recommended servings of dairy foods such as milk contributes to becoming overweight. Weight loss is achieved by reducing total calorie intake /and or increasing physical activity, and thus dairy foods, especially low/non-fat options can easily be incorporated into this regimen.

Indeed products such as cheddar cheese, whole milk etc. as seen in the table below are more calorie dense than the low/non-fat alternatives. The advantage of such alternatives is that they still provide the same amount of calcium, whilst also providing, vitamin D, etc. in the correct proportions to maximise absorption.

Saturated fat and cholesterol

Foods high in saturated fat tend to raise blood cholesterol. Saturated fat is found in high fat dairy products.

  • Saturated fatty acids (SFA’s) raise blood cholesterol.
  • Monounsaturated fats (MUFA’s) lower blood cholesterol.
  • Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA’s) keep blood cholesterol levels the same
  • Dietary cholesterol refers to cholesterol found in food of animal origin only.

It is accused of raising blood cholesterol levels but this is a controversial issue to date.

The relative amount of HDL:LDL is more important than total blood cholesterol.

It is advised that foods with a high proportion of calories from fat should be eliminated or limited in the diet as they are regarded as one of the many causative factors in coronary heart disease, hence the anti-dairy food campaign!

Getting Rid Of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Under: Arthritis

Many people with a chronic problem of rheumatoid arthritis know only too well that they cannot stay without using formulas to check the progress of this debilitating disease. Yet they also respect the wisdom of using natural remedies. Natural solutions have the ability to draw from nature the beauty and soothing quality of its elements. They come unchanged and have no side effects, which is more than can be said about pharmaceutical products.

Before we look at a few of these remedies, let us see what we are avoiding in pharmaceutical products. After all, someone could ask what it is we are afraid of in these other products.

The matter is rather simple. Take aspirin for example. It is a very good reliever of pain and it even calms down swelling of joints in rheumatoid arthritis. You could ask why with such a pain killer of world repute and with an equally strong anti-inflammatory effect should have to worry anybody. It is true. It will not cause heart trouble of mess up lung tissue like some of the steroid based medicines. But with continued use, it will cause you bleeding in the gastrointestinal region.

So, do you still want to know what is on offer naturally?

- The Devil’s claw: so called from the appearance of hooks on the fruit of this plant, it has been used for longer than Christianity has existed. The people of South Africa have used it to treat rheumatoid arthritis, pancreas trouble, skin conditions and even fever. It has been proven to contain harpagosides and the painkilling ingredient, vioxx.

- Fatty acids (the omega-3): our bodies are not producers of omega-3 fatty acids but they need it. There have been studies to test the validity of the claim that these have any assistance to offer the rheumatoid arthritis patient. From salmon fish and other cold water fish, they are found in oil and have a way of dissuading persistent swelling. Since most fish now have traces of mercury, you can obtain your supply of omega -3 fatty acids in oil extracted, screened for chemicals and packed as capsules.

- Boswellia: the herb is a native of India and it is acidic in component structure. It works as an inhibitor to swelling. What’s more, it brings on no irritation. It has been packaged as a pill now which should be easy to obtain and use. The extended use of this by rheumatoid arthritis patients should be abserved by a doctor.

- Gamma-linolenic acid: this one is found to be contained in borage oil, evening (primose) oils and black currant seed oil. It works like omega-3 fatty acids as an anti-inflammatory.

When you choose your medication, remember to consider your age, extent of joint damage and whether other treatments have worked before.

Look at the following tips and build on your knowledge of this disease.

1. There a more than 100 types of this illness. In occurrence, a single variety can probably be called a single disease. These related conditions are diagnosed as different and treated as such. The most similar thing with all is that it affects joints and the areas surrounding the joints. At risk is cartilage that prevents bones from rubbing against each other. Other varieties afflict the muscle and soft tissue too.

2. Arthritis cannot be cured; it can be managed. With this in mind, we can begin to understand its various treatments and what they do. At this point, let us get it clearly that the best a treatment formula can do for you is reduce the amount of pain, calm down the inflammation around joints and slow down the progress of this disease.

3. The only expert who should handle your case should be a rheumatologist. Such a doctor’s expertise is in arthritis and they understand it better, have probably treated it before and have a more truthful picture of the reality this disease is.

4. It is possible to be limited by the effects of this disease in your functions on a daily basis. You might not be able to walk well, bend over, stoop or do stairs. Your productive hours of work might be reduced by attacks of deep pain. It is important that you begin to understand this and make provisions for it. you can relinquish some of your responsibilities at work or assign duties you used to perform to other members of the family.

5. It cost to treat arthritis. Even when you strive to keep your treatment of this chronic illness natural, you are only lowering the cost. Herbs and supplements cost and you cannot postpone buying them like you would do with a new shirt. Healthy eating can also cost you a little. What is important to know is that everything costs. What matters is to make it worthwhile.

6. Emotionally, there can be a strain. Before spouses begin to understanding that arthritis will not go away, it might take some time and some emotional strain. You are also bound to be shocked at the discovery, so be ready for it.

7. An early diagnosis is probably the best thing that can happen to a sufferer of this disease. It is possible to slow it in its early stages and lead a normal life. This way, it gives you the best opportunity to fight it.

8. As people are different, treatments favour some and not others. It will take time before you land the formula that works for you. Stay on the experimental path and stay optimistic. Patience will eventually pay.

Stay in the know and you will be a step before arthritis. That way it will be struggling to bring you down, not you struggling to stay abreast with it.

Treatment for sciatica nerve pain

Under: Pain Management

Sciatica is a common form of lower back pain and it affects people from all ages. The pain can be from mild and temporary to very severe and chronic. Most of the time the sciatic nerve pain is a result of people’s own wrong habits and lifestyle. There are many things that people can do, to ease and eliminate their pain. The main thing is to take action and not postpone the treatment.

Treatment for sciatica nerve pain

In order to treat sciatic nerve pain, it is very important to find out what causes the pain. Too often people only treat the symptoms and therefore never get long-term results. Muscle imbalance is the main cause of lower back pain. When some muscle are weak and the others tight, then this creates an imbalance. The problem is that muscle imbalances force the hip joints and pelvis out of position. When the hip joints and pelvis are not in their right position, then this can apply pressure to the sciatica nerve.

There are many treatments for sciatica nerve pain that you can use. If your pain is really severe, then it is better to use a cold pack or ice, at first to reduce the pain. Cold can lessen the inflammation around the nerve and can even prevent sciatica before it starts. What you should do is put ice or a cold pack on the lower back for around 10-15 minutes, then take it off for 10-15 minutes and put it on for 10-15 minutes. This procedure is only effective for the first 48 hours, the longer you wait the lessen the effect is.

Balancing your pelvis is another great treatment for sciatica nerve pain, because the pelvis is basically a foundation and when the pelvis is in balance, then everything else also falls into place. You can check if your pelvis is alright by laying down and placing a hand on both sides of the pelvis at belt height.

If you are doing the right treatment for sciatica nerve pain, then you will be able to eliminate the pain for good. It is important to take the treatments seriously and really know what you are doing. Doing a few exercises here and there, does nothing to help you in the long run.

Information on the Adrenal Gland

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 No Commented
Under: Health care

Adrenal gland lie above the kidneys and contain two portions known as inner and outer or medulla and cortex. The medulla is producing norepinephrine (adrenaline ) and epinephrine. The adrenal cortex produces other hormones such as cortisone and aldosterone necessary for fluid and electrolyte (salt) balance in the body.

Couples with a healthy relationship communicate with each other on a regular basis. The lines of communication are always open. Healthy couples are able to tell each other when something is wrong. Healthy relationships consist of two equally committed individuals. Healthy couples have realistic expectations of each other and are not over demanding.

The inner portion of the adrenal glands is related to the sympathetic nervous system and provides the body with a substance call “adrenalin”. There is no disease associated with insufficient action of the inner portion of the adrenal gland, because the body can compensate through other mechanisms for lessening secretion. Excessive functioning of the adrenal gland medulla is associated with paroxysmal periods of high blood pressure and other signs of excessive stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, including sweating, dizziness, palpitation, a rapid pulse, and changes in the blood. Since tumors may occur in the adrenal gland, a tumor of the inner portion of the adrenal gland is accompanied by all of these symptoms. This indicates surgical removal of such tumors as soon as their presence is determined.

The outer portion of the adrenal gland is a shell made up of cells which create steroid hormones. At present, physiologists believe that there are as many as twenty-six different hormones developed by the cortex of the adrenal gland. The cortex of the adrenal gland is stimulated to give off these hormones by a substance from the pituitary gland called adrenal cortex trophic hormone or ACTH.

The hormones from the cortex of the adrenal gland can regulate the secretion and distribution of sodium, potassium and chlorides by the body; water balance; they are concerned with the quantities of carbohydrates, protein, and fat used in the chemistry of the body. They are concerned with the development of certain types of cells in the blood. They are also related to the keeping of nitrogen in the body, and they are related to the action of the sex hormones. The person suffers from insufficient sugar in the blood and from a variety of symptoms such as pain, lassitude, nausea, and circulatory collapse when there is an insufficiency of the adrenal cortical material. A typical brown pigmentation of the skin appears, the disease known as “Addison’s disease”.

Excessive functioning of the gland may result in the development of conditions such as swellings of the face and trunk, weakness and wasting of the muscles, serious changes in the bones, thinning of the skin and difficulty in healing of wounds. Apparently the body must maintain a balance between the action of the various hormones coming from the pituitary and adrenal glands, because imbalance may result in serious changes in growth.

Cortisone

From the adrenal cortex come two hormones now called Compounds E and F or known by the general name of Cortisone or Cortone. This hormone has a definite relationship to many different conditions, some of which have already been mentioned in these articles.

Both the cortex and the medulla of the adrenal gland are important in enabling the human being to adapt himself to conditions of stress. The adrenalin,as has been mentioned, is closely associated with the sympathetic nervous system. The hormones of the cortex help the body build resistance to all sorts of damaging influences, such as cold, heat, burns, exhaustion, fasting, chemical agents, and even bruises. The hormones help the body to maintain adequate amounts of sugar in the blood. Among the conditions that have been treated successfully with Cortisone and with ACTH-which stimulates the production of Cortisone are the allergic reactions such as asthma, hay fever, and serum sickness. Remarkable results have been achieved in treatment of acute rheumatic fever with termination of the attack and apparently, in some cases, complete control. Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus and polyarteritis nodosa are conditions now believed to result from sensitivities of the tissues to certain substances and which have responded favorably to treatment with Cortisone. Even certain infections and some serious conditions affecting the blood have responded favorably. All of this work is so new, however, that it is quite impossible to say how permanent some of these improvements may be or the ultimate changes in the body that may result from long continued use of these hormones. Apparently the conditions are not a result of a deficiency of the hormones, but rather that these hormones in some way alter the reactions of the tissues in the body.

Again one should realize that ACTH and Cortisone are not identical. ACTH can stimulate the secretion of all types of hormones of the adrenal, including those concerned with water and salt, sugars, and the sex hormones.

The Onset of Diabetes

Under: Diabetes

The most common symptoms of onset diabetes are well known among medical researchers and doctors. But these common symptoms can be misleading due to the fact that these symptoms also appear in diseases other than diabetes.

The common symptoms of onset diabetes are excessive urination, dramatic weight loss in a short period time, extreme thirstiness, sudden bouts of impaired or blurred vision, and a constant feeling of listlessness and no energy. These are the common signs, but just because you do not have any of these symptoms does not mean that are protected from the disease.

When a person has this illness, it means that his body cannot regulate the amount of glucose in his blood stream. This means that either his body is not making enough insulin to convert the glucose into energy. Or the body is producing enough insulin, but for some reason the body is not able to make use of the insulin. In either case, the end result is that the body ends up with too much glucose in the bloodstream. Extended periods of too much blood glucose is bad for the body. It can cause drastic shocks to the system as well as the gradual shutting down of the body organs of the body.

The symptoms of the disease are recognized at different points for the two main types of diabetes. For type 1 or juvenile diabetes, although there is no definitive age, these symptoms usually start to show up around the age of 14 or so. For “adult” onset diabetes or type two diabetes, the symptoms – if they appear at all, normally begin to show up in the early twenties. It is worth noting, however, that type two diabetes is showing up earlier and earlier in the population. This is primarily due to the fact that it is basically triggered by diet and obesity. And as the American diet seems to get worse every year, teenagers get fatter each year, and the incidences of this disease increases every year.

Most of the aforementioned symptoms of onset diabetes are signs that can be observed either by careful observation or sight. But there are medical symptoms as well. For example, obesity – especially in those with pear shaped bodies – has a very close correlation to diabetes. High blood pressure is another medical condition that has a high correlation to diabetes. High fat levels in the blood is yet another symptom that diabetes may be present. And there are many others as well. Again, the presence of any of these symptoms does not indicate diabetes – but the presence of any of them, and especially the presence of more than one of them, is a sign that you should probably have your doctor test for diabetes.

As mentioned before, some people with illness do not manifest any obvious symptoms. That is why it is good to periodically have your blood sugar tested during your physical. This is especially true if you have a family history of diabetes or if you fall into any of the high risk groups that are known to be susceptible to the disease.

The belief behind the treatment is that energy of Chi flows around the body and along certain meridians through the body. When a person is unwell either physically or emotionally it is thought that there is either an imbalance or a blockage in the flow of this energy. Acupuncture uses the insertion of needles in certain points in the body called acu-points. It is thought that the insertion of needles in specific points can help to balance the energy in the body and in turn bring the person back to health. Before treatment begins a therapist will get a full history of your life and of your illness to determine the correct points to trigger in your specific case.

But there is more to stress reduction than just thinking your way to relaxation. Physical activity can actually play a significant part in your stress level. Walking or jogging can be great, simple and inexpensive ways to quickly reduce stress. But it is also important to do an activity that you truly enjoy for maximum benefit. In addition, you might want to consider framing your goal into a weekly or even daily timeframe. If your goal is to wake up earlier, you might be more successful in accomplishing it if you write down “wake up 15 minutes early tomorrow“.

Spring is a beautiful time during the year and most of us can’t wait for sunshine and flowers after the long, cold winter. However, if you have deal with allergies, the season might be downright miserable time for you.

There is a world of spring allergens, which are literally in the air! Allergy sufferers may be sensitive to pollen, mold, dust, and pet dander too. However, you can significantly decrease your symptoms and sometimes eliminate them altogether. Find out how!

While at home, it is advisable to keep your home’s doors and windows closed. Although it is not possible to completely seal off your home from outside, don’t be tempted to open the windows to let “fresh” air in if you are prone to allergies. Also, if you dust your home regularly, ensure that you wear a mask while dusting. You should limit your outdoor activity, especially early in the morning as the pollen counts are high between 5 am to almost 10 am. Don’t forget to take Vitamin C supplements during the spring season and invest in a good quality air filter.

If you’ve been careful and followed all these precautions but still experience allergies and sinus problems, it is time to meet a doctor. There are a variety of medicines available, such as, antihistamines, nasal steroid spray, nasal antihistamine sprays, leukotrienes inhibitors, decongestants, which will help reduce or block allergy symptoms. For cases, which are harder to treat, allergy evaluation and immunotherapy is an effective option.

Allergy Evaluation: Allergies are caused due to a host of ear, nose and throat symptoms. Your doctor can help determine the specific allergens, which cause the symptoms and treat it accordingly. RAST blood work, which is a method using your blood sample and skin testing are common means to determine allergies.

Allergy Immunotherapy: If you choose immunotherapy to treat your allergies, it helps build blocking antibodies, reduce the allergic response and help in complete elimination of the allergies. Normally, shots or oral drops are used. It reduces the need for injections and frequent clinic visits too.
